A 2013 study found that on average, UK pubs, restaurants, take-aways and hotels generate 600,000 tonnes of food waste. 200,000 tonnes of this is made up of food diners do not finish but, what about the other 400,000 tonnes? Inevitably some of this waste is down to things like bones and peelings removed during food preparation but it is generally accepted that 50,000 to 100,000 tonnes of food is wasted every year because of poor commercial refrigeration maintenance, leading to breakdown.
This is where regular commercial refrigeration maintenance and servicing is so important. Not only do components age and unfortunately breakdown but the general efficiency of something like a cold room or freezer decreases over time. As this decrease in efficiency occurs, the appliance can lose its ability to keep food stored at a constant temperature, leading to thawing, partial cooling and basically food that cannot be served to customers. This food would have to be thrown away leading to considerable expense to the business – especially when spread over a year!
Any business with commercial refrigeration in place can avoid this by keeping up with regular maintenance on their appliances.
How often should servicing be carried out?
Just like with service schedules on vehicles, commercial refrigeration maintenance and servicing depends on the brand and model of appliance. The level of use the appliances sustain is also a contributing factor but on average at ThermoCool Solutions we recommend that businesses with commercial refrigeration equipment have it serviced every 12 months. An experienced refrigeration engineer will be able to ensure your appliances run efficiently all year round, minimising the amount of down time which could lead to costly food losses.
